Reflection
Experience: This semester of advanced typography is very much different from last semester's typography class. The most obvious change is that the lecturers were giving us more freedom in a way less guidance compared to the last semester's typography class. I was usually lost most of the time in advance typography, I did seek help from the lecturers but was ignored. Instead they let me figure out myself as a part of the learning process. Hence, I seek help from my classmates which is way better as they are willing to send help and feedback. This is better mostly because students get serious or rather harsh comments in class, including myself which makes me anxious and doubting myself all the time. Initially, I wanted to choose my major as graphic design but after experiencing both typography classes I find it not suitable for me. In fact, it kind of discouraged me, causing me to lose interest in it and also somehow lost my confidence in graphic design. I can say it is the toughest course to me, I did try my very best in this semester and I only hope to pass this module. I am still grateful for the ones who had given me help when I needed the most and I understand this is my process of learning.
Observation: I observed that typography can be simple but complicated, just like a quote I've read online saying that design is simple yet complicated. Sometimes it can be a very simple design but it is the best design. I'm not sure how but I personally like simple designs however I was being told too simple or playing safe or lack of creativity. I've also tried to make different things however I was told that typography has its theory and laws to follow. It is complicated as it may seem simple but it follows all the criteria in typography theory which makes it complicated. I conclude it as typography is being creative in a restricted manner.
Findings: During this semester I found many useful things. The most useful finding were learning more about Adobe Software. In this class we are required to use Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop cc and Adobe After Effects. This semester I was more familiar on using different tools in Adobe Software, I discovered more functions, effects that I've not been able to do in semester 1 thanks to all the youtube tutorials. I also find that most of the best students in our class like to use black and white for all the works and designs. I'm not sure why but I love colors, not pastels but matte colors, I rarely use black and white in my works. I'm assuming black and white are the favorite of most designers as it is very contrast and basic.
