Week 8 : Visual Analysis
- Is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
- In its strictest definition - a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
- Yet the purpose of visual analysis can also recognize the choices that a designer made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.
- Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images, whether in museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.
- As citizens of the 21st century, we are constantly confronted with visual media. Practicing visual analysis sharpens critical judgement skills and helps people seek out answer instead of passively receiving information.
How does visual analysis work?
Visual analysis can include three phases.
- Phase 1 : Observation
- Phase 2 : Analysis
- Phase 3 : Interpretation
Phase 1 - Observation
- Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
- The observation phase is about looking thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
Phase 2 - Analysis
- Analysis requires you to think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations.
- Think about how the specific visual elements that you've identified combine together to create a whole, and what effect that whole has on the viewer.
- How your eye is led through the work and why?
Phase 3 - Interpretation
- In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
- What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created?

These are my top 3 favorite designs from a Korean artist illustrator from online and I really liked her work. She started off on instagram, due the fame of her illustrations, her work was viral to twitter, pinterest and all over the web. I really like simple designs and these designs were simple yet attractive.

Observation
This design work is in portrait format. As for visual elements, the observed main colors were red, orange, yellow and brown. Overall it is a simple yet colorful design. Most elements were created using lines and shapes. On the top left an image of a boy lying down looking at a smartphone was featured in the artwork. On the bottom right, an image of a girl lying down looking at a smartphone was also featured in the artwork. Both were in different background settings and coloring. There is a horizontal line at the center which cuts the artwork into two different section. There were black outlines in every element.
Analysis
This design uses rules of third on the top half of the image - the boy, and the bottom half of the image - the girl. The emphasis is on the top left - the boy, and the bottom right - the girl. The boy laying down looks to the right and the girl laying down towards the left which shows movement. The light that came from the smartphone shines on the face of both boy and girl which leads ones to focus their facial expression. The colors of the background was darker whereas the color of the boy and girl was brighter which brings focus on both of them. A repetition of windows and white stars was found on top and bottom left of the image. There is harmony in the overall composition as it involves the selection of elements that share a common trait. Overall the image was balanced and proportion.
Interpretation
This is an illustration designed for social media quotation. It shows an image of couples having long distance relationship. Although they are far apart, however it does not affect the love bond between them. The artist uses comic drawing style which is very simple and cute. It is also very easy to understand, even without having to put words in the image, people can understand the meaning behind just by looking at it. The use of colors also attract attention of audience as it uses sharp colors like red orange yellow.
Idea Exploration :
I wanted to create something similar which shows two people in different places who are connected. Therefore, I went on a research journey to get ideas.

My Sketches :
Since the design I chose was connect between people in different places, I decided to create a similar design. However, instead of using horizontal lines to separate the image, I use vertical lines to separate my image. My idea is to show two people in different places can be connected.

Figure 4.1 Sketch |
For the first sketch on the top, it is to show a pair of siblings in different places but they were doing the same thing. The reason behind this idea was to portray the situation between me and my sister. Due to the pandemic my sister who was studying at overseas could not return to Malaysia. In order to stay in touch with her, I video call her everyday to update on our daily life. We often do homework, watch movies or any activities together by video calling at the same time.

Figure 4.2 Sketch |
For the second sketch on the bottom, portrays a couple posing in a picture which was taken in a different scenery. This idea was inspired by the design I've chosen, I was thinking of presenting the same idea in a different matter. This idea is also about long distance relationship, however it is presented by matching to pictures together. Both of them took pictures in different place but they make the same reflected pose which seems like both of them are in the same picture.
Final Sketch :
Since I chose the sketch in Figure4.1, I was told to improvise and create another design by using the same idea but present in a different matter.

For the window on the right, I leave it blank as I will add on snow when I fill in the colors.

Figure 4.4 Color Scheme 1 |
I chose two colors as my main color, the reason is because I was inspired by the design in Figure 3 which was the design I did my visual analysis on. I also changed the design of the window on the left as I wanted to emphasize on the weather outside to show they are in different places. The curtain is very distracting.

Figure 4.5 Color Scheme 2 |
I find this combinations of color is better. I prefer color scheme 2. The reason why I chose these colors is because these are the favorite colors of me and my sister. Purple and Pink ; Yellow and Blue.

Figure 4.6 Color Scheme 3 |
Since the color was too light I decided to fill in matte color of pink and yellow. I keep the colors of the background and the chair dull as I wanted to use bright colors on the girls.

Figure 4.7 Color Filling |
I did some adjustments on the colors and I colored all the other objects and such. I made them similar color as the artist Ari which I did an analysis on likes to use similar colors in different tone and brightness, I wanted to try it out too. I'm quite satisfied with this color scheme, it would be my final if Miss Jinchi approves it.

Figure 4.8 Color Scheme 4 |
Lastly, for the last touch up, I added the rain and the snow storm outside the window to show different weather which implies different places. I also drawn facial expression for both of them. The bright colors reflects joy in us when we stay in touch even though we are apart.

Figure 5.1 Final Design |
This design was inspired by my Visual Analysis design in Figure 3 about long distance relationships. Since my sister is studying abroad therefore we are also experiencing long distance sisters relationships. I am very close to my sister, we would always communicate via video calling almost everyday to share our daily life. The reason why I chose yellow and pink in the design above is because those are our own favorite colors. I try to use one color in different tones to differentiate different objects, this was inspired by the artwork that I analyzed on. It is to emphasize the characters by using dull color in the background and using bright colors on the character that was meant to emphasize on. The artist used dark orange and yellow colors to show the mood and how they feel. However, when me and my sister were having conversations we were in a bright mood, despite we miss each other. Therefore I chose to use bright colors like pink and yellow, it is also meaningful as it is our favorite color. I've also tried multiple colors and find that this is the most suitable one. I hope this pandemic can end soon so that I could reunite with my sister.
Reflection
Week 11: I was worried I couldn't find the designer of the design that I wanted to choose. Fortunately, I found the instagram ID of the designer. From there I found all of her design and information about her.
Week 12: I wrote the visual analysis according to the lecture notes, I hope my analysis can be approved in the first go! I thought we just suppose to show visual analysis in this week but when miss asked me about my sketches I was so shocked! I was so confused and anxious at that moment.
Week 13: I hope this week is just checking our sketches. The students in our class is moving way too fast I feel like I couldn't catch up.
Week 14: I suppose to color it so I worked on coloring on my new sketch. However, I was having a hard time deciding which color to use, so I called my sister and ask what color she would prefer for my final project as it involves her after all. I really hope to get good feedback from Miss Jinchi on the next class,,
Feedback
Week 11: Miss Jinchi approved my design that I chosen, she mention I should choose one of the design myself and if I change my mind I could always change another design.
Week 12: Miss Jinchi said I had to make changes to my analysis for movement, describe it better. For the interpretation, miss suggested me to write more like the style of the drawing but not the meaning behind.
Week 13: Miss Jinchi said both of my ideas are about relationship, I could decide on which to choose. She feels that the sister bond sketch was meaningful and I also can relate better. She wants me to add on some background and a different scenario. She ask to make another sketch and fill up colors.
Week 14: Miss Jinchi said that I should make the rain drop more visible. She also suggested to try out different colors and discover more possibilities. Try to make contrast, try out with orange and blue.
