Week 4 : Harmony & Unity

Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait. Harmony becomes monotony without variety. Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme. Harmony and unity work hand in hand.

Variety is about a change or slight difference in elements and objects in composition, to avoid a boring composition. Variety can also involve varying angles, exposure, composition, etc.

Proportion
Proportion is the relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another. Proportion is said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity. The effective use of proportion in design often results inharmony and unity.

Exercise

Week 4 : Harmony & Unity
The exercise for this week as usual is to come out with two design for each principle, one for harmony, one for unity. However, exercise materials for this week are poster colors or acrylic colors. I started sketching out some of my ideas from my research on Harmony and Unity on the lecture section.

Figure 1.6 My Harmony Sketches

I'll start off with explaining my idea exploration for Harmony. For the very first sketch on the left, it is a landscape of a swam, the water is quiet and I added a lily pad in the pond so show peacefulness. The dry tree and bat makes a Dracula creepy vibe. The reason I have this idea is because I personally love non fiction stories very much, especially mythologies stories. I am a vampire fan rather werewolf but I do like them too,  it's just I like vampire more. For the second sketch which is in the middle, I draw giant sushis falling from the sky, landing in front of a farmers's house, and the farmer was shocked after seeing the sushis. I got this idea from proportion research, (figure 1.4) I was thinking what if there's giant food instead of animals? I really enjoying food trip so I just thought that giant food may be cool. Lastly for the sketch on the very right, I draw a couple watching a sunset view. The reason why I had this idea is because I feel like this scene creates a harmony feeling, and it is also usually found in movie films and dramas. Therefore I wanted to sketch it out.

Figure 1.7 My Unity Sketches

Moving on to my idea exploration explanation for Unity. For the first sketch on the very left, I drew a hotpot. The reason being is that hotpot usually requires an amount of people to have it together in order to enjoy it as multiple dishes will be cooked in a pot, it is best to share it with family and friends. This brings people together or unite in other words as it is a sharing type of food. Also, I personally enjoyed hotpot very much therefore I think of this idea. For the second sketch which located in the middle, I drew five hands making a peace sign which shows a shape of a star. How I got this idea is because sometimes me and my friends like to take pictures to post it on instagram making this sign to show our friendship bonding. Lastly the sketch on the very right, I drew a bunch of people sitting together viewing the stars on a hill. I really like stars and night views, one of my dream is to have a chance to see millions of stars in the sky. There is a saying of wish upon a star and your dream will come true. I might want to give it a go.

Figure 1.9 Final Sketch for Unity

After the feedback in class, I made some changes and sketch out two more designs for both Harmony and Unity.

Figure 2.0 Final Work for Harmony
For this art work I used gradient green to color the grass so that it will not be only one color. I felt like it may seems to be boring having one type of green for the grass.

Figure 2.1 Final Work for Unity

For this artwork I used red color for the soup, the reason being is this is the soup of the hotpot is super hot. If you were to visit hotpot restaurants from China, the spicy flavor soup is basically in red as it's filled with red chili.

Reflection
Week 4 : This week is the forth week of design principle, it is fun using new materials and learning new principles. However, with the work load of other subjects coming all together, it could be exhausting sometimes. This makes me hard to think of creative ideas as my mind is not working and thus it gets difficult to come out with ideas. But I am coping and try to deal with it, I have gotten better since the first week. I learned the importance of time management. I'm glad Miss Jinchi is giving us encouragement and confident also understanding our situation, which makes me keep moving on.

Feedback
Week 4 : After Miss Jinchi went through my sketches, she suggested me to choose the giant sushi for Harmony although the Dracula landscape seems interesting too but the sushi is more special. She recommended me to place the sushi in a way that is arranged, not placed randomly. Just draw it like how the Japanese restaurants would arrange it in order. For Unity, she suggested choosing the hotpot design so other two design seems generic. However, change the view of the hotpot instead, make it high angle view and show the hands coming into the picture in order to portray Unity.
