Week 3 : Repetition & Balance
Repetition
So what is Repetition? It is basically making a work of design seems active. Repetition of elements of design creates rhythm and pattern within the work. It is important to keep it exciting and active and to avoid monotony. Pattern can increse visual excitement by enriching surface interest.

Movement
It is the way a design leads the eye in, around, and though a composition ( the path the eye follows. Motion or movement in a visual image occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image. Movement in a visual image comes from the kinds of shapes, forms, lines, and curves that are used.

Hierarchy
It is a choreography of content in a composition to communicate information and convey meaning. Visual hierarchy directs viewers to the most important information first, and identifies navigation through secondary content.

Alignment
It is the placement of elements in a way that edges line up along common rows or columns, or their bodies along a common centre, Alignment creates a sense of unity and cohesion, which contributes to the design's overall aesthetic and perceived stability. Alignment can also be a powerful means of leading a person through a design.

Exercises
Week 3 : Repetition & Movement
This week as usual we have to come out with two designs according to the design principle we learn this week. One for Repetition ; one for Movement. I always come out with three designs for each principles as I want to show Miss Jinchi more of my ideas so that she can have more design options to choose from. These are my sketches for each principles :

Figure 2.3 Sketches for Repetition |
I will explain my ideas starting from the very left side. So, for the first sketch on the left I drew a flower repeatedly. The reason why I drew flowers is because this week is my mom's birthday and I got her a bunch of flowers and she was delighted therefore I decided to draw some flowers. For the middle sketch, I drew a man shocked and his eyes pop out repeatedly. I got inspired by my favorite cartoon Tom & Jerry! Lastly for the sketch on the very right, I drew a butterfly with few layers of wings. I got this idea from my house backyard. I was getting ideas as I walk to my backyard and I saw butterflies in the bushes, I then got the idea. These are the explanations for my Repetition sketches.

Moving on to explanation of the sketches for Movement, I will explain starting from the very left sketch.
For the sketch on the left, I drew a movement of basketball. The reason why I got this idea is because I was gaining weight recently and I wanted to exercise in order to lose some weight. So I went playing basketball with my neighbors, it was so exhausting my body was soar for days. For the middle sketch, I drew a girl with different facial expressions. Actually it is a slow motion of laughing, I got this inspiration from the movie Zootopia. In the movie, it is a world of animals, the DMV was run by an animal called sloth, they move extremely slow in motion, they even take few seconds to make expressions or laugh.

Lastly, for the sketch on the right side I drew a girl making a love sign. I got this idea from kpop trends, the kpop idols usually does this symbol to show love for fans. Also it uses the principle of Hierarchy from under Movement principle. I made the focus point on the heart first then only the girl below.

Figure 2.6 My Final work for Repetition |
I forgot to take note of my final sketch before I fill in color, but I did draw a new sketch. So, this is my final work for both principles. For movement design, I tried different layers of color before I decide on the final color.

Reflection
Week 3 : This week we had a public holiday therefore I spent those precious time to take a good rest as I didn't rest well for the past few weeks. It really helps me to think of more variety of ideas in a short period of time, usually it took me a long time to think of an idea. I liked my eyes popping sketch I was even smiling when I was drawing. I thought that miss would like it too, turns out she does! Her smile gives me assurance of my work and designs. The lecture notes is very helpful for me as I always refer back to the lecture notes whenever I am lost or running out of ideas. It really helps me to understand more on the principles so that I can think of ideas following that direction.
Feedback
Week 3 : Miss went through my sketches of Repetitions first and the sketch of the eyes popping out caught her attention. She immediately asked me about the explanation behind this idea, she was so excited when I mentioned about the cartoon Tom & Jerry. She suggested to make the man at the bottom of the paper and only show the shoulder, emphasize the popping eyes and make the exhumation mark popping out as well. After that, she check on my movement designs and was interested on the very right design with a girl doing a love sign when I mention the use of Hierarchy principles. She recommended me to make the love larger and more layers, use gradient colors to create heart beating effect, also try to make the girl smaller.
